Synthesis of cis-Pt(NH3)(3-hidroxypyridine)Cl2(AH3)-Thiazole
Cisplatin is a widely used anticancer drug, and has many side effects that have limited its use. To attempt minor side effects and more selective activity, thousands of cisplatin derivatives or analogues have been prepared by varying the nature of the leaving group or ligands. It will be the first time that cis-Pt(NH3)(3-hidroxypyridine)Cl2(AH3)thiazole is synthetized in the laboratory using a procedure where potassium tetrachloroplatinate (K2PtCl4) is the starting compound to this synthesis. Finding and making this compound will lead to grand success and a pathway to more accute investigation.
My mentor is Dr. Mayra Cadiz and she specializes in the fields of Inorganic Chemistry. I chose this investigation area because first of all I love chemistry, and I saw this as an opportunity to learn more about the field. But I think that the fact that influenced my decision was the purpose of the investigation. Cancer is a disease that has affected millions of lives in the world, many of those affected have lost their lives fighting this disease. One of the main reasons this happens is that some of the treatments given to the patients are not strong enough to cure the whole disease. Cancer has affected the ones I love, and it has even taken away their lives, because of the advanced stages that this disease has. Reading a brief description of the project and picturing a better world without so many people affected with cancer, motivated me to join Dr. Cadiz and her team of students, to look for a way to attack cancer cells, by using cisplatin.
My first experience in the lab has been filled with wonderful experiences throughtout the beggining of the semester. I have learned so much. I never knew working with metals (expensive ones too), was going to be so thrilling. I’ve learned to prepare solutions and dilute them to a certain quantity wanted and expected. Also I learned in a more profound and deep way the concepts of: coordination compounds, ligands, platinum, oxidations states, nomenclature of inorganic compounds and many more. I’ve read papers that have a precise procedure in the formation of the compound with thiazole. I’ve learned certain terms that are used in the lab, certain reactions that can occur with K2PtCl4 and other solvents (like for example water). We have gathered together in group reunions to learn more about the process, to know each other…..we even had a cleaning day and we had lots of fun together. The professor reunited with each student to explain the project assigned (we all do different projects, but kind of similar, so we help each other). It’s been very successful because we could start the process without any problems in particular, and we are halfway there to reach the formation of the desired compound.
Our purpose and goal by the end of the semester is to synthetize cis-Pt(NH3)(3-hidroxypyridine)Cl2(AH3)-Thiazole by using K2PtCl4 as the starting reagent (its less expensive than other material used for the synthesis of the compound) and attempt minor side effects and more selective activity in the desired area.

Very well said. The world needs more minds to help fight cancer. The project sounds intriguing and i wish you all the best of luck. Keep at it!
The investigation sounds promising and I know that any details will help fight the voracious disease cancer is. Wish you all the best of luck and hope this opportunity helps all of us, the BioMinds. succeed academically and personally. God Bless! Jo
simply awesome…wish you luck
Hi Magdelisse!
Very informative. I was a little lost last time you explained the approach of your project, but now it seems much clearer. I hope everything runs according to plan. Take care, see you in class.
Hello Magdelisse
Thank you for your comment. I was reading your blog about the description of your reasearch and i have to tell you that your field is a very interesting and important one. (Specially because i love Medicine and Health Sciences and looking for a way to cure such a letal illness is a goal) Its really a great opportunity to be studying and investigating that area. Cancer is consuming us day by day and its a great hope to know that there are students like you, interested in obtaining an efficient method to counteract this disease. Im “prepa” jeje, but im studying Industrial Biotechnology too. Hope to meet you soon! Take care!! KIT.
Work hard. Play even harder,
Marie Feliciano Segarra
Very interesting
hope you do well on your research on fiding how to help people to fight with cancer better or make disappear for good.
Magdelisse;
The study description looks very promising.
Also it looks like you are very motivated to perform research which is nice to hear. Good luck in this endeavor.
i see that you really wanna do this. It looks interesting and i hope that it goes really well and that any research that you can come up to can be of great benefit to many.
Hi Mady!!!!
I’m amazed by your project. It’s really nice that the first part of your project did well. Hope all your results this semester do OK…..See you at the lab and as you said long live CISPLATIN!!!!!……jejeje …… Take care
That’s a pretty nice photo!!! I hope that the synthesis become a success and keep on investigating because this is your passion and you will achieve great things. You are the BEST!!!!! God bless you!!
Hey Magdelisse!!!
Wow your reasearch sounds really interesting!, even made me wanna change majors LOL. Its inspiring to hear about people actually enjoying this type of work, we need the biominds!
I wish u and your group the best of luck. ^.~
Hola Magdelisse me alegro que estes interesada en un tema
tan importante como es el cancer. Cuando se tiene perseverancia todo se logra.Sigue adelante, te deseo mucho exito. SIEMPRE TE APRECIAMOS MUCHO.
Best of luck with your research. It is very comforting to find such a brilliant project being developed in our area, as well as the ramifications of your project, not only in the area of oncology, but on the “human” side of this devastating disease.
I hope that you continue your work on basic research which is the base upon new treatment strategies are built. Oncology is certainly one of those fields that benefit from young motivated scientists; good luck!
I’m glad that you’re enjoying your research. It’s very interesting. I’m definitely looking forward to more on what your doing in the lab. I think you were very descrpitive in your research and that’s very good. Look at all the comments you have! Congratulations. Puts my research’s loose description to shame…=( Well, much success in the future.
Cuidate
